This is a list of the different ways people scam on Mabinogi and some ways to avoid them.

Price pushing
A very common scam where people pretend they have an offer they do not so that you would raise your offer.
How to avoid:
When dealing with big trades. Always ask for the name of the people bidding against you.

NX trades.
The most well known scam out there. Nexon does not allow for a safe way to trade NX.
This kind of trading depends on trust. A lot of scammers take advantage of this.
Also don't get guilted into giving item/code first. A lot of scammers say they would go first just to make you feel like you should trust them. But when its time to trade they find some reason why you should go first.
How to avoid:
Don't trade NX.

Trade Buddies
There has been a lot of cases involving this type of scam recently.
It takes at least two characters to pull it off. One person would claim to have an item you want usually expensive. They would ask for a specific item, one that is not easy to find a seller but it is worth much less than the item you want. The second person sells the item the first asked for a price that is higher than the item is worth but less than the market price of the item you want from the other person. After the 2nd person sells the item to you the first dissapears or finds a way to get out of the trade. Leaving you with an item that you will never get the value back form.
How to avoid:
If its too good to be true it usually is.
A good protion of the scammers doing this type of scam don't actually have the rare item you are looking for. So always ask to see the item.
DON'T MAKE ANY TRADES UNTIL YOU DO.
A good way to test is by calling them out. Say you have the item or a got it/getting it from a friend. Some would run then or say they want a different item.

Drop Trade/"Check"
Some scammers ask you to drop the item/money in their homestead. As soon as you drop the item they kick you out. NEVER drop your items for whatever reason.
There is no glitch that makes a player unable to trade, the ability to drop an item does not verify whether the item was duped or not, or whatever other reason the scammer will give you to drop the item.
Scammers now like to have an alt/friend in the homestead with them, they pretend to not know each other. The story is that this 2nd person is also going to sell an item to the scammer. This person would drop his item and pick it up with no problem. They do this so that they can lure you into a false sense of security.
How to avoid:
NEVER drop your items.

Force Trade
This was a hack where scammers used a program to force complete a trade.
This has been patched (for now).
How to avoid:
Always know what kinds of hacks are around even when you do not use them.
